Abstract: How to Reach 70% Recovery?

Our global challenge is meeting the projected 40% increase energy demand by 2030 in a sustainable way that protects the environment.

Since the beginning of oil production, many technology breakthroughs and thousands of incremental advances in exploration and production have increased oil recovery levels from less than 10% of the initial volume in place to in excess of 70% in some case. The often-quoted industry average of 35% recovery for conventional crude oil raises the question, “Can we double it to produce several more trillion barrels?”

A 10% incremental recovery of oil from the remaining conventional resource base by improved recovery through IOR and EOR technologies can add 600 billion barrels of recoverable oil. If we can raise our total recovery to 70%, we can add a few trillion barrels of recoverable oil.

There are also significant opportunities for increasing oil supplies in deepwater and arctic exploration, and in unlocking the potential of unconventional oil and gas resources, but we need additional technology to realize that potential, drive down costs and reduce the environmental impact. However, commercializing technology in the oil and gas market is costly and time intensive, with an average of 16 years from concept to widespread commercial adoption.

How are we to accelerate the development of essential technology? The key is more collaboration in R&D and sharing innovations among industry, governments, and academic institutions, as well as with scientists outside the E&P industry.

SPE is a natural forum for collaboration, and brings together experts from across the worlds to collaborate and share technical knowledge. This presentation discusses some SPE specific initiatives for accelerating the development of technology.
